Matters to Consider Before Studying the Bible
2 Timothy 2:15, Psalm 119:15-16, Philippians 2:12, 16, Hosea 4:6-8
Before we study the Bible, we should pray (Psalm 119:18) for wisdom and discernment.
When studying the Bible, we should have an open mind. (Acts 17:11-13)
How to Study the Bible
Focus on the particular book as a whole
1. What is the Theme of the book?
2. Who wrote the book and why?
3. Who was the audience?
4. Look at the outline of the book.
Look at one passage at a time and read over several times
Ask several questions
1. What is the writer trying to say?
2. What is the major idea of this passage?
3. Is there a strength I can gain?
4. Are there commands to obey?
5. Are there sins to forsake?
6. How do I apply this in my life? Does it still apply?
Determine the meaning of words
Greek Lexicon, Bible Dictionary, Baptism "baptizo" to sink, drown- Matt. 28, Mark16:16
Look at the context of the passage - John 3
Don't hold salvation on one verse! John 3:16. Look at surrounding verses, and other passages that would include " What must I do to be saved?"
Look for answers in other parts of the Bible!
John the Baptist - Is he Elijah? Matt. 17: 9-13, Malachi 4: 5-6, 2 Kings 1:8, Mark 1:6, Luke 1:16-17, John 1:21. Look at clear verses, then unclear. Ask why the unclear.
Do a Topical Study
For instance- Grace
Use a concordance or lexicon to help you match up all the scriptures. This will help you understand this important doctrine. Once we determine what the passage is trying to teach us, we can better look at all the other passages to get the correct teaching.
Do a biographical study
On characters- to see how God provided and the lesson He taught them. Use concordance, chain reference. Example: Mothers (What can we learn from Godly mothers?)
Put yourself in the same situation
How would you feel? What would you do? How would you want to be treated if it happened to you? Is there a lesson to be learned?
